This is the finest treatment of the Golem legend, upon which the Frankenstein story is based. Wegener and Boese’s film depicts ghetto life in medieval Prague. The mystical Rabbi Loew attempts to save the Jews from a certain pogrom by bringing to life a giant clay man. He soon loses control when the Golem falls in love with the rabbi's beautiful daughter and brings fear to the emperor's court. In contrast to conventional science fiction with its themes of science and technology gone berserk, the Golem, with its Kabalistic and secret oral traditions, is about the formidable responsibility we have for creation.
THE GOLEM is directed in the visual tradition of THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, using expressionist sets - without a single right angle. The stunning visual imagery of the film is enhanced by a new score by Bay Area musician/composer Daniel Hoffman.
