We Are Going to America

In the words of Sholom Aleichem, "People do not live in America, they take refuge there." Russian filmmaker Efim Gribov crafts a tragi-comic tale of one family's journey out of the shtetl and into a world of unknowns. Inspired by the paintings of Marc Chagall, the voyage is seen through the eyes of 11-year-old Motl, who encounters comic and grotesque figures; the dreamy orphan Taibl; the Felliniesque madwoman Feigele; and an assortment of ghosts from the past. Luminous cinematography and atmospheric sets create a sense of wonder and chaotic adventure as this family makes its way towards America.
