Director Daniel Robbins expected to attend
Emerging from the COVID-19 quarantine, actors and filmmaking collaborators Zack Weiner and Joe Gallagher navigate the lull in the film industry by making a film about running for city council. But instead of simply playing a candidate, Weiner dives head first into the role by actually running for city council in his Upper West Side New York district. Assembling an eccentric team of his young, ambitious, and creative friends—and aided by the unsolicited suggestions from his opinionated Jewish mother whom he still lives with—Weiner documents his humble journey through election season. Fiction and reality blend as the motley team ventures through public rallies, debates, and inventive community events, and even faces a major scandal that threatens to derail the whole campaign. Wildly creative and endlessly amusing, reminiscent of the works of Christopher Guest and Nathan Fielder, Daniel Robbins’ mockumentary is an impressive feat of hybrid filmmaking. This one-of-a-kind genre-bender is a humorous and endearing love letter to the people who dedicate their lives to public service in often unseen and underappreciated ways. — Celeste Wong
West Coast Premiere
Daniel Robbins is an NYC-based filmmaker who takes exciting concepts and grounds them with authentic performances, surprising humor, and propulsive energy.
His breakout film Pledge was a hit at Fantasia Film Festival and sold to IFC Midnight as well as a streaming deal with Hulu. He also won “Best Director” at Screamfest. Variety calls it a “lean and mean shocker,” the New York Times proclaims “...the director is willing to move beyond the tease of his setup to deliver a ringing indictment of popularity as the cheese in a deadly mousetrap,” and The Daily Beast calls it “a fleet, ferocious, and razor-sharp affair.”
His next two features are Citizen Weiner, which was boarded by Abso Lutely and Village Roadshow; and Bad Shabbos, which stars Kyra Sedgwick, Method Man, Jon Bass, David Paymer, Milana Vayntrub, and Ash Zukerman.
Daniel is repped by CAA and Grandview.
