Local Call!

With everything going on in astronomer Felix Mandel’s life, he just doesn’t have time for Judaism too. While his career and domestic life ascend in importance, his faith is in retrograde. In fact, when his father died two years earlier, so did Felix’s consciousness as a Jew. But then his father begins to harangue him with collect phone calls from the Great Beyond. And, as Felix discovers, that can be a very expensive call. Things move fast in this absurd Parisian farce as Felix’s life begins to completely unravel. It seems he must be stripped of everything before he can discover what is truly important in life. But an old faith and a burgeoning romance with stunning Yael (Rachida Brakni) help to turn this fragmented modern man into a new and whole human being. In a masterful performance as Felix, pop-eyed international star Sergio Castellitto (Don’t Move, Mostly Martha) leaps, bounds and somersaults his way through the odyssey of the tormented protagonist’s life and ultimate transformation. With one of the most animated faces in cinema today, he is that rare breed of comic leading man with the skill of an emotional acrobat. This is Castellitto’s second venture with director Arthur Joffe, who makes a cameo appearance in the film as a psychiatrist. The accomplished Joffe also directed Alberto Express, Harem, which was nominated for five Césars, and Merlin ou le Cours de l’Or, which won the Golden Palm at Cannes.
