Autism in Love

In director Matt Fuller's touching and compassionate documentary we are given a privileged look into the lives of four adults with autism spectrum disorders as they search for and manage romantic relationships. Lenny is a young man living in Los Angeles with his single mom. He spends his time watching sports, playing video games and just trying to fit in. He is lonely and desperate for a girlfriend, but he has very rigid ideas of what he needs to do to accomplish this. Stephen, a middle-aged man who lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, has been married for 17 years, but his wife Geeta is struggling with ovarian cancer. Stephen speaks in a manner reminiscent of the Dustin Hoffman character in Rain Man and spends a lot of time with his parents watching Jeopardy and answering all the questions with great relish. Lindsey and Dave have learned to cope with each other's individual quirks. They have been together for eight years and are now contemplating marriage. Though scared and tentative, they muster the courage to broach this monumental life decision. Through all this, Matt Fuller's sensitive direction pulls at the heartstrings in just the right places and in just the right doses, resulting in a beautiful and compelling film.
