Yellow Asphalt- A Trilogy of Desert Stories

This remarkable production was written and directed by veteran Israeli filmmaker, Danny Verete (WALL WITHIN THE CITY, SFJFF 1983), and funded by the prestigious Israel Film Fund. The ethereal and visually stunning Judean desert, just minutes outside of Jerusalem, is the landscape of desire. Three dramatic encounters between East and West unfurl depicting the way in which Western culture is pushing its way into the desert, once the sole domain of the Bedouin tribes. Shaken by forbidden love and impossible marriages, ancient Bedouin traditions are invoked. In each case, it is a woman who is betrayed by the past and an impossible future. The stories, based on true events, are played by Bedouins. The film reminds us of how close relationships can be between two divergent cultures sharing the same land.
Danny Verete began his career as both a writer and director in 1981. He immediately received recognition for the 35-minute short "Wall Within a City" (1981). Verete teamed up with the director Daniel Waxman for "Hammsin" (1982). The film won an Israeli Oscar and Best Israeli Film of Decade and numerous other awards abroad. His first feature film is "Koko is 19" (1985). His second feature as a director, "Yellow Asphalt" (2000), was shown at several international festivals and won the special jury prize in Cologne.
