Join the JFI Teen Social Justice Film Fellows for an afternoon of film and conversation prompted by a screening of the short film Her Dance.
Screening includes a live Q&A on Zoom with director Bar Cohen and a panel conversation with Bay Area teen activists about LGBTQ+ issues.
Aya, a young trans woman, comes from an Orthodox Jewish family. After not being invited to her sister’s wedding, she unexpectedly shows up one Sabbath evening at the home of her estranged family, who are in the middle of a celebration with the Jewish community. Entering through a window, Aya interrupts the wedding feast and threatens to reveal family secrets and lies. Winner of multiple film festival awards, Her Dance is director Bar Cohen's exploration of her own story as a trans person growing up in a strict religious environment.
This program is curated by the Jewish Film Institute's Teen Social Justice Film Fellows, a cohort of fourteen teens from around the Bay Area of Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds, working with JFI staff to present programs for Bay Area teens and the wider community reflecting the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam: repairing the world with our actions.
Bar Cohen is a student at the Steve Tisch Film School in Tel Aviv, Israel. Her film Her Dance received the Audience Award and the award for best student international short at the Palm Springs ShortFest.
This screening is free to all teens with a required RSVP. Snacks will be provided. Masks and proof of vaccination are required for entry. All COVID-19 protocols of the JCC East Bay will be observed.
