After the Islamic revolution of 1979, more than 80 percent of Iran’s Jews abandoned their ancestral land, leaving behind a vestigial community of just 20,000, principally in the cities of Tehran, Isfahan and Shiraz. Jews of Iran, a courageous Iranian film arriving even as Iran’s current regime has stepped up its anti-Semitic rhetoric, is a timely portrait of the remnants of those Jewish communities and the strength of the faith that allows them to hang on against the ever-present tides of political, cultural and social perils that work like forces of nature to wear down their very existence. Filmmaker Ramin Farahani gives us a loving portrait of a community where old ways survive in quiet dignity.
